Why Most Marketing Doesn’t Connect (And What Storytelling Changes)

Updated: 3 days ago

I have worked with some great Sales professionals. And there is one thing they all had in common: they could command a room with their stories. People listened to their stories, and they remembered them. Whilst storytelling has been around for millennia, it is still so important today - to both marketers and sales professionals. This is because today there is an overload of content, and your audience is busier than ever, your messages are finding it harder to connect. The problem is people are using content to share facts, features, perceived benefits. This no longer connects. There are too many messages so very little gets remembered. The issue is not a lack of content, it is simply a lack of of connection.

With an overload of content - the ones with stories are the ones with cut-through

Why There Is A Lack Of Connection

From what I see, I would summarise the problem within 3 core areas:

  • Information is no longer scarce Facts are everywhere. With AI now, it is easier to create content quickly by using facts and information. But these facts may not be unique to you.

  • Most content feels interchangeable Many messages sound the same now. AI creates a content loop and too many companies outsource content creation which itself is not a problem, uinless your unique voice is not clear in the execution. Otherwise your content looks like others, sounds like others, says the same thing as others.

  • There is a pressure to "get things out there" In an increasingly competitive environment, teams feel the need to produce more and more. It becomes "we are doing this" rather than "we are achieving this". Doing more is not the solution.

This all makes it hard to stand out

Use Storytelling To Connect

Humans respond more to content that is relevant first and foremost. Then you can use emotions and make things relatable. That is where storytelling comes in. After all, your stories are YOUR stories and unique. And people remember stories more than facts. This has been proven by the likes of Harvard Business School and London Business School.

What storytelling changes

Storytelling isn’t just a theory, it solves a a fundamental problem: how to make your message meaningful and memorable.

It does this by making ideas easier to remember by creating emotional connection. By showing real-world context. And by making your brand feel human.

What this looks like in practice

Tell Not Sell

To get storytelling, start by moving from an explanation to experience where you can.

Think of it this way:

“Here’s what we do” vs “Here’s what happened”

Make the customer the focus

The story isn’t about you. It is about your customer - whether that is a consumer or business.

It’s about the the challenge they faced, the journey they took and how you solved their problem.

Show reality, not perfection

Stories that resonate often include uncertainty, mistakes you made and how you overcame these. The hurdles and those unexpected things. Make it as real as possible.

This builds trust.

It's Not About Doing MORE

Storytelling is not about adding to your worklists. It is about changing how you communicate. Tell stories as much as you can. Facts inform. But they rarely stick.

If people don’t remember what you say, they won’t act on it

Storytelling matters because:

it turns information into something people recognise, remember, and respond to
